You may have noticed that it’s been a couple weeks since we last posted a new episode. We’ve been busy doing summery things — such as taking a long-overdue trip to the beach, or putting in long hours at work so we can take a trip to the beach in the future — but you can expect a return to business as usual in the next week or so.
In the meantime, because we’re music journalists and can’t help it, we made you a compendium of our favorite releases of the year so far. Maybe it’s the return of touring (kind of), maybe it’s the floodgates of pandemic-incubated projects opening up, but 2022 thus far has been gangbusters for exciting sonic outputs across the board.
You’ll find some of our personal favorites in the (decidedly unranked) playlist we made for you below (enjoy!), but mostly we wanted an excuse to hear from you: What’s one track or album released this year that’s made you excited about music again, or haunted you these past few months like a troubled friend from the past? If a creature from outer space suddenly materialized in your living room, what would you play them to illustrate best that human civilization has to offer? Bonus points if it’s something that we probably haven’t heard before, but if you want to go “mass” we’re here for it.
Respond to this thread and let us know what you think. We’d love for this to be a living resource that our listeners can add to and come back to for listening recommendations as the summer rolls on. And if you turn us on to something that we love, we’ll include your selections in an upcoming edition of Offline Recs.
+1 on the floating points singles, I really liked overmono's 'cash romantic' EP and a few of the two shell singles that have come out this year as well. "chasing the sun" from the angel olsen release also def makes my list. +1 re drew, feel like I haven't been super on it re listening to new stuff, not really sure why
Somehow the dirty algorithm did me correct yesterday and a Panda Bear/Sonic Boom collaboration appeared out of nowhere. It was a good day on the internet.

i haven’t listened to as much music as i usually do, but here’s what i’ve liked of what i’ve heard:
- "breathing" by they hate change, whose album 'finally, new' is one of the most innovative hip-hop records in years, goes in like 15 directions at once and is anchored by experimental rappers who can really really really rap
- "reemplazante" by mueran humanos has a perfect "closes out an episode of twin peaks season 3" vibe
- "bmw" by bad boy chiller crew is the best craig david song that craig david never made
- "never let you go" from haru nemuri's 'shunka ryougen' is a song that must be heard to believed
Honorable mention that I couldn't include in the playlist because it was part of a project meant to posit a more musician-friendly alternative to DSPs: "Chaos" by Jenn Morel, Abel Romijn and Zach Britt, members of the 77-artist "headlines band" behind the wildly ambitious music NFT project by the same name.
